Katrina 20: Faith, Climate & Justice:  A Self-Organized Global Ethical Stocktake Dialogue in New Orleans

On August 28, 2025, GreenFaith USA and Center for Earth Ethics co-hosted “Katrina 20: Faith, Climate & Justice” at the TEP Center in New Orleans. The event marked two decades since Hurricane Katrina and explored the moral and spiritual dimensions of the climate crisis through the lived experiences of Gulf South communities. It also served as a Self-Organized Dialogue of the Global Ethical Stocktake.

A new video documenting this Global Ethical Stocktake dialogue has now been released, capturing the voices, insights and community wisdom that emerged.

Co-moderated by CEE Executive Director Karenna Gore and Jacqui Patterson of the Chisholm Legacy Project, the event convened faith and civic leaders, Indigenous culture-keepers, frontline organizers, and Katrina survivors. In addition to Fore, the speakers were:

  • Bette Billiot
  • Toi Carter
  • Dr. Angela Chalk
  • Rev. Tyrone Edwards
  • Scott Eustis
  • Anthony Giancatarino
  • Chenier “Klie” Kliebert
  • Sharon Lavigne
  • Gregory N. Swafford
  • Darrilyn Turner
  • Former Vice President Al Gore.

Local jazz musicians opened the gathering, and Mississippi poet Artis Burney closed with a poem he had penned over the course of the Dialogue.
