Karenna Gore to Travel to Louisiana for 20th Anniversary of Hurricane Katrina

Karenna Gore is set to travel to Louisiana for a series of events marking the 20th anniversary of Hurricane Katrina. On Wednesday, August 27, she will join Sharon Lavigne of RISE St. James and former Vice President Al Gore, at the Cancer Alley United: Rise For Our Lives Before We Die gathering. The event, which will also feature Dr. Rev. Samuel Jones (Pastor, Mt. Calvary Baptist Church) and Rev. Lennox Yearwood (President & CEO, Hip Hop Caucus), “is both a solemn recognition of the toll toxic pollution has taken on our communities and a powerful call to action to ensure Cancer Alley is not our destiny,” says RISE St. James.

On Thursday, August 28, the Center for Earth Ethics will co-host Katrina 20: Faith, Climate & Justice – A Moral Witness Dialogue in New Orleans with GreenFaith. This self-organized dialogue of the Global Ethical Stocktake will explore the moral and spiritual dimensions of the climate crisis through the lived experiences of Gulf South communities. The dialogue, which Gore will co-moderate with Jacqui Patterson of the Chisholm Legacy Project, will feature frontline and faith leaders who have spent the past two decades rebuilding, resisting environmental racism, and envisioning a just future.

Gore travels to Louisiana in part in her capacity as the co-leader of the North America Dialogue of the Global Ethical Stocktake. Both events reflect a key objective of the GES: to ensure that diverse voices—particularly those from frontline communities—inform how the world measures and responds to the climate crisis.
