Karenna Gore Featured in Valor Econômico Ahead of Global Ethical Stocktake
CEE Founder and Executive Director Karenna Gore recently sat down with Daniela Chiaretti of Valor Econômico, a major Brazilian publication, for an interview exploring the ethical dimensions of the climate crisis in the lead-up to COP30 in Brazil and the Global Ethical Stocktake (GES).
In the conversation, Gore reflected on the central role that faith and wisdom traditions can play in motivating climate action. She underscored that “change is inevitable, but the type of change is what matters,” calling for a collective shift “away from the mindset that we can just take from the Earth without giving anything back or considering the costs and externalities.” Instead, we must safeguard a livable future by respect nature. “It’s time to celebrate the life we have here, care for it for future generations and ensure it is available to all,” she said.
Gore highlighted her role as co-leader for the North America Dialogue of the Global Ethical Stocktake—a groundbreaking initiative supported by the COP30 Presidency and Brazilian Ministry of Environment and Climate Change. Featuring six dialogues from around the world, the GES seeks to elevate the moral and ethical dimensions of the climate crisis. She commended the GES as a vital forum to elevate diverse “ways of framing [the climate crisis] that can be effective in motivating people.”
“If you look at the situation through an ethical lens, it is much clearer,” Gore said. “Many people are already suffering and dying from air pollution. We have all the data, science and technology we need, but that’s not enough because human behavior and perception are driven by other factors like culture, spirituality and values.”
