SUMMARY:WORKING THROUGH ANCESTRAL KARMA
DESCRIPTION:We inherit more than our DNA from family—we gain habitual patterns\, particular ways of relating to money and time\, and perhaps even ancestral karma. Join leadership coach and author Hylke Faber in conversation with Buddhist teacher Miles Neale as they discuss how a relationship with our authentic nature can transcend our sometimes wonderful and sometimes messy inheritance. \nHylke’s family have been farmers in the northern part of the Netherlands for generations. He argues that part of what connects us back to our authentic state is the memory that our ancestors lived with a deep connection to nature. We can further reclaim our true nature by seeing through our fear-driven conditioning\, which Hylke calls our “crocodiles” in his recent book Taming Your Crocodiles: Unlearn Fear & Become a True Leader. Miles argues that what we do now has been influenced by the past but will also affect the future\, on an individual\, societal\, and environmental level. Learn to work through family karma from a place of genuine connection by joining these two great teachers for one fantastic night. \nA book signing featuring Hylke Faber’s Taming Your Crocodiles: Unlearn Fear & Become a True Leader and Miles Neale’s Gradual Awakening: The Tibetan Buddhist Path of Becoming Fully Human will follow the program. \n*** \nKARMA: ANCIENT WISDOM MEETS THE FUTURE Series at the Rubin Museum\n\nSomewhere between inventing the wheel and rocketing to Mars\, it seems that humanity has lost its ability to see the world as an interdependent enterprise\, with humans\, animals\, trees\, earth\, sun\, moon\, and the stars karmically intertwined in ecological intimacy. \nIn a series of conversations\, screenings\, and performances\, our Future Fellow Karenna Gore draws on a diverse set of wisdom and spiritual traditions to provide us with a rich source of ethical values. It is only through this non-anthropocentric worldview that is respectful of nature and compassionate to all forms of life that we can forge a sustainable future.

SUMMARY:Learning the Mesoamerican legacy of being in harmony with nature: A workshop and talk with Dr. Mindahi Bastida

SUMMARY:Take class with CEE in November. Topics in Ministry: Religion and Climate Change
DESCRIPTION:SU190 Course Fall 2018: Topics in Ministry \nReligion and Climate Change: The World’s Faith & Wisdom Traditions in Ecological Crisis \nRegistration is open to UTS students/SU190 and to the public for a $25 registration fee.  Register here. \nClimate change is about more than science and economics. It raises questions about our moral obligations to one another across space and time and the nature of our interconnectedness. The same is true of other aspects of our ecological crisis: deforestation\, extinction of a vast number of species\, and the depletion and contamination of soil\, water and air. A deep inquiry into human belief systems yields insights into both the root causes of this problem and the sources of hope. Our studies include Laudato Si by Pope Francis\, the legacy of the Standing Rock prayer camp\, The Time to Act Is Now: A Buddhist Declaration on Climate Change\, The African Methodist Episcopal Church Statement on Climate Change and other major statements and voices. We also examine the ways in which theological language has been used to bolster support for the continued extraction and burning of fossil fuels.

SUMMARY:PHAKCHOK RINPOCHE + ERRIC SOLOMON ANCIENT WISDOM AND TECH FUTURE
DESCRIPTION:If you thought ancient wisdom and Silicon Valley had nothing in common\, think again. Tibetan Buddhist lama Phakchok Rinpoche talks with tech entrepreneur Erric Solomon about ways we can break out of the imprisonment of habitual action (karma) and start to experience the unconditioned existence where true happiness lies. It’s radical. The speakers have prepared for this program: they are joint authors of Radically Happy. \n  \n“Radically Happy brings the new and the old together in a beautiful way. Phakchok Rinpoche marries his deep understanding of ancient wisdom with Erric Solomon’s experience in the technology-driven modern world. The combination helps us understand how meditation\, kindness\, and wisdom can make a real difference\, moment to moment\, in daily life.” —Mingyur Rinpoche\, author of The Joy of Living and Turning Confusion into Clarity A book signing of Radically Happy will follow the program.

SUMMARY:Indigenous Timekeeping and Sacred Sites Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Does time fly? Is it a line\, a circle\, a spiral? Does it touch us differently in different spaces? Many of us take for granted the meaning of the clock and the calendar\, without considering that they are cultural constructs—related to natural cycles but also distinct from them. \nIn this workshop you can explore your own notions of time and space while learning about Indigenous timekeeping and sacred sites. The workshop is led by Geraldine Patrick Encina of the Center for Earth Ethics\, who has studied the ancient and traditional calendars of Mesoamerica and also worked with Mayan communities to reclaim their original ways of timekeeping\, and Mindahi Bastida Muñoz\, also of Center for Earth Ethics\, who works for the protection of the sacred sites and biocultural heritage of Indigenous peoples. \nAttendees are asked to bring a picture of a beloved home landscape and of a sacred site they are connected to. Please also bring a device that can access Google Maps. \nThe schedule is as follows:\nSalutation to the seven directions | 11:30–11:40 AM \nParticipant’s place-based presentation | 11:42 AM–12:15 PM \nBirth season and birthplace\, ancestors’ land(s)\, and a description/depiction of our beloved home landscape in every season. \nTimekeeping as a method of “placekeeping” or caretaking for the land | 12:17–1:00 PM \nThe Mayan case. Watch a short video about the original wisdom of the Maya and their true calendar. Learn about sacred sites in Mexico and their related ritual calendar dates. By using Google Maps\, try to figure out what is/are the ritual calendar date(s) for your sacred site. \nBreak | 1:00–1:20 PM \nDeveloping a time-space consciousness | 1:25–2:00 PM \nKeeping track of the sun\, moon\, and stars in our beloved home landscape. \nActivating Sacred Sites | 2:02–2:20 PM \nHow do we activate sacred sites in our beloved home landscape? Some guidelines. \nWriting a letter to our beloved home landscape | 2:22–2:30 PM \nAn opportunity for reconnecting in a sacred way. \nAbout the Speakers \nGeraldine Patrick Encina is the Scholar in Residence at the Original Caretakers Program at the Center for Earth Ethics. She has studied the ancient and traditional calendars of Mesoamerica and also worked with Mayan communities to reclaim their original ways of timekeeping. \nMindahi Bastida Muñoz is director of the Original Caretakers program at Center for Earth Ethics.
