Closely connected to the stories of the Hindu deity Krishna\, the Yamuna is venerated and worshiped by Hindus worldwide. Despite this\, the river is considered to be “dead”\, so heavily polluted that no life can exist within it. After leaving the Himalayas it reaches Delhi\, where the water is diverted and replaced with untreated sewage water. It is this water\, which contains dangerously high levels of toxic chemicals that Hindu devotees use for worship and rituals. Despite several high profile campaigns over recent years\, the plight of the Yamuna is no closer to being resolved.\n\nOn Monday\, May 30\, 2022\, at 8 a.m. Eastern Time\, the Center for Earth Ethics will host “A Consultation on Water: River Yamuna.” This exploration of climate and pollution issues around one of India’s greatest rivers will be moderated by Gopal Patel\, senior advisor at the Center for Earth Ethics.\n\nThis is the second consultation in the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration series\, Values\, Culture and Spirituality. #GenerationRestoration\n\nRegister\n\n

The event comes on the eve of 6th anniversary of the NUA’s adoption at the landmark Habitat III Conference held in Quito\, Ecuador in September 2016.  The Habitat 3 conference was instrumental in advancing the global understanding of the role of culture and heritage for sustainable and resilient cities and human settlements. It occurred only a few months after the UN General Assembly had taken the innovative decision to expressly include natural and cultural heritage in the UN Sustainable Development Goals\, through SDG 11.4. The amplification of SDG11.4 in the urban context can particularly be seen in sections 14c\, 38\, 45\, 52\, 60\, 69\, 97\, 124 and 125 of the New Urban Agenda. \nThe April 2022 event will use as a point of departure the Habitat III Urban Village Project “La Alameda Historic District of Quito: Forging Heritage Tools for Urban Sustainability (Art and Citizen Participation).” The project is known informally as “Vive Alameda” after the Quito neighbourhood that was home to Habitat 3 and which is also part of the “buffer zone” of the Historic Center of Quito\, the first city inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List.  \nThis project was a collaboration between different community actors and various local\, national and international cultural heritage experts. They came together to explore\, experiment and examine the historical layers of fabric\, values\, cultures\, traditions and experiences of the historic La Alameda neighborhood to test the cultural concepts proposed for inclusion in the NUA and to develop and showcase tools to implement them. DESCRIPTION:An expansive movement of landowners\, Indigenous water protectors\, Black leaders\, and climate activists are mobilizing to ensure the Mountain Valley Pipeline is stopped. In the past few months\, the pipeline has suffered some severe blows. In November\, Indigenous and Black leaders ensured the Lambert Compressor Station was stopped\, signaling a huge environmental justice victory. In January\, the US Court of Appeals stopped MVP from further destroying Jefferson National Forest. Yet as it stands today international law is inadequate to address extreme\, willful damage to the environment. \nNow\, a global effort is underway to make international law a more powerful mechanism to protect our planet. In June 2021\, the Independent Expert Panel for the Legal Definition of Ecocide defined ecocide as the “unlawful or wanton acts committed with knowledge that there is a substantial likelihood of severe and either widespread or long-term damage to the environment being caused by those acts.” \nThis definition is an initial step to making ecocide an international crime. At present\, the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court lists four international crimes: genocide\, crimes against humanity\, war crimes and the crime of aggression. DESCRIPTION:On Friday\, October 29\, at 12:15 p.m. Scotland Time (7:15 a.m. in New York)\, Karenna Gore\, executive director of the Center for Earth Ethics\, will deliver the opening address at “Uniting the World to Tackle Climate Change: Perspectives from Religion and Politics\,” an international conference hosted by the Centre for the Study of Religion and Politics at Scotland’s University of St. Andrews. \n\n\nThe three-day virtual conference will address the theme of the United Nations Climate Conference\, or COP26\, which begins on November 1\, in relation to religion and politics. Scholars from Europe\, Asia\, Africa\, and the Americas are scheduled to participate. The COP26 CSRP Scholars Conference is being hosted in conjunction with Scholars at the Peripheries (a group of scholars from the Global South) and Laudato Si’ International (a group that has been working to understand and deliver the message of Pope Francis’ encyclical Laudato Si’ on the care of the planet as the common home). \n\n\nClick here to register on Eventbrite \n\n\n\n

DESCRIPTION:The Center for Earth Ethics\, Episcopal Divinity School at Union Theological Seminary and the Kairos Center will co-host a screening of new documentary by Raj Patel called “The Ants and the Grasshopper.”  REGISTER \nThe film follows Anita Chitaya of Malawi as she goes to the US Midwest\, and communities of color in Detroit and the White House. She sparks discourse about climate (and food justice\, gender\, race\, etc) along the way\, including using her Biblical fluency to talk to climate skeptics. This is intention from Raj Patel: \nAs the COP26 climate summit approaches in November\, we very much hope that communities of people of faith are able to heed the call for justice\, and that this film might serve as the basis for taking action.  \nA panel discussion will follow moderated by EDS at Union’s Dean Kelly Brown Douglas. \n \n
