SUMMARY:A.I.\, Ecology & Earth Ethics
DESCRIPTION:What are the social\, ethical\, and religious implications of artificial intelligence for the environment and the climate crisis? How can faith leaders apply their ethical insights of religious traditions to understand the nature\, possibilities\, and limitations of A.I.? What are the moral implications of this new technology\, which holds the possibility of impacting nearly every aspect of human life? \nTo help us begin understanding the ecological issues surrounding artificial intelligence\, the Center for Earth Ethics at Union Theological Seminary will host “A.I.\, Ecology & Earth Ethics” on Wednesday\, September 28\, at 5:00 p.m. Scheduled participants at the salon-style discussion include: \n\nRev. Fred Davie\, Senior Strategic Advisor\, Union Theological Seminary & Commissioner\, U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom\nKarenna Gore\, Founder & Executive Director\, Center for Earth Ethics\nKen Kitatani\, Director General\, International Council on Environmental Economics and Development\nIsaac Sharp M.Div.\, Ph.D.\, Visiting Assistant Professor of Theological Studies\, Union Theological Seminary\n\n\n\n\n\n \nThis salon will be held in-person in the gathering space at “A Species Between Worlds\,” an interactive exhibit hosted by artist John Mack at 537 West 27th Street in Manhattan. This exhibit\, which focuses on how AI can shape our perceptions of reality\, will provide a fascinating backdrop for a discussion of AI\, ecology and earth ethics.

SUMMARY:Confronting Plastics: A Strategic Ethical Response
DESCRIPTION:Concern is one of the most important ingredients for mobilizing engagement and action from individuals for personal and collective change. How we communicate about the climate crisis and raise awareness on the actions and solutions that are available\, accessible and ready to deploy\, determines whether we are able to empower and inspire our networks to take action. \n\n\n\nIt’s the difference between someone becoming overwhelmed by the enormity and complexity of the problem that is presented\, or\, becoming elevated and engaged\, ready to take action to create change. Are we simply stating the problem at hand\, or can we become better storytellers as an international community? \n\n\n\nThis panel will bring together youth activists\, climate change communications experts\, and representatives from the United Nations family to reflect on how we can generate concern about climate in ways that are not debilitating\, and instead catalyze the change we need in society to cultivate climate ambition from our governments.

SUMMARY:36.5 / New York Estuary
DESCRIPTION:36.5 / A Durational Performance with the Sea is a series of nine site-specific performances and video artworks that engage the public in conversations about deep time and sea-level rise. Interdisciplinary artist Sarah Cameron Sunde stands in a tidal bay for the full tidal cycle (12-13 hours) as water engulfs her body and then reveals it again. She partners with local organizations and invites the public to participate by standing in the water with her and by marking each passing hour from the shore. These works have been created with hundreds of people in communities around the world: Maine\, Mexico\, San Francisco\, the Netherlands\, Bangladesh\, Brazil\, Kenya\, and Aotearoa-New Zealand. \n\n\n\n36.5 / New York Estuary is the ninth and final work in the series. Join Executive Director Karenna Gore and others as they join Sunde at the Cove in Astoria\, Queens. \n\n\n\nThis duration\, 7:27 a.m. to 8:06 p.m. (12 hours\, 39 minutes)\, relates to the timing of the full tidal cycle in Lenapehoking-New York City near The Cove on September 14\, 2022

On Thursday\, June 2\, Executive Director Karenna Gore will speak at “Faith in Earth\,” a seminar that will create room for deep listening where religious perspectives are discussed in the context of the Stockholm +50 conference.\n\nAn official side event to Stockholm +50\, this seminar will highlight the role of religious actors in shaping a new values-based and sustainable development paradigm. The seminar builds on the rich and important UNEP’s Faith for Earth conversation and the outcome of its 25 sessions during UNEA 5. It will include both faith narratives and voices from the most vulnerable in our societies.\nLearn More AND WATCH LIVESTREAM

SUMMARY:A Consultation on Water: River Yamuna - Mon\, May 30
DESCRIPTION:A Consultation on Water:  River Yamuna\nMonday\, May 30\, 2022\n5 a.m. San Francisco | 8 a.m. New York | 2 p.m. Paris | 5:30 p.m. New Delhi\n\nThe river Yamuna is one of India’s most sacred rivers. Closely connected to the stories of the Hindu deity Krishna\, the Yamuna is venerated and worshiped by Hindus worldwide. Despite this\, the river is considered to be “dead”\, so heavily polluted that no life can exist within it. After leaving the Himalayas it reaches Delhi\, where the water is diverted and replaced with untreated sewage water. It is this water\, which contains dangerously high levels of toxic chemicals that Hindu devotees use for worship and rituals. Despite several high profile campaigns over recent years\, the plight of the Yamuna is no closer to being resolved.\n\nOn Monday\, May 30\, 2022\, at 8 a.m. Eastern Time\, the Center for Earth Ethics will host “A Consultation on Water: River Yamuna.” This exploration of climate and pollution issues around one of India’s greatest rivers will be moderated by Gopal Patel\, senior advisor at the Center for Earth Ethics.\n\nThis is the second consultation in the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration series\, Values\, Culture and Spirituality. #GenerationRestoration\n\nRegister\n\n

SUMMARY:“Vive Alameda”: culture and heritage-related provisions of the New Urban Agenda
DESCRIPTION:Vive Alameda Habitat 3 Urban Village Project Six Years Later:  \nFrom a Quito Neighborhood to the World\, A look at Advances in the Implementation of the New Urban Agenda Through Culture and Heritage \nIn the framework of the High-Level Meeting of the UN General Assembly on the progress in the implementation of the New Urban Agenda \n  \nDate and Time:  Wednesday\, 27 April 2022\, 10:00 to 12:30pm  \nModality:  Hybrid (Online and In-Person).  In person location: Van Alen Institute\, located at 303 Bond Street\, Brooklyn\, NY  11232.  https://www.vanalen.org/about/.  \nRegistration: \n\nIn-person: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/implementing-the-new-urban-agenda-thru-culture-and-heritage-in-person-tickets-316991910337\nOnline: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/implementing-the-new-urban-agenda-thru-culture-and-heritage-online-only-tickets-313853944597\n\nOrganizer: Instituto Metropolitano de Patrimonio de Quito (IMP) \nPartners: Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ecuador; Climate Heritage Network; International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS); Municipality of Quito (additional partners forthcoming) \nShort Concept Note:   \nThis event will examine the state of progress towards implementation of the culture and heritage-related provisions of the New Urban Agenda. The event comes on the eve of 6th anniversary of the NUA’s adoption at the landmark Habitat III Conference held in Quito\, Ecuador in September 2016.  The Habitat 3 conference was instrumental in advancing the global understanding of the role of culture and heritage for sustainable and resilient cities and human settlements. It occurred only a few months after the UN General Assembly had taken the innovative decision to expressly include natural and cultural heritage in the UN Sustainable Development Goals\, through SDG 11.4. The amplification of SDG11.4 in the urban context can particularly be seen in sections 14c\, 38\, 45\, 52\, 60\, 69\, 97\, 124 and 125 of the New Urban Agenda. \nThe April 2022 event will use as a point of departure the Habitat III Urban Village Project “La Alameda Historic District of Quito: Forging Heritage Tools for Urban Sustainability (Art and Citizen Participation).” The project is known informally as “Vive Alameda” after the Quito neighbourhood that was home to Habitat 3 and which is also part of the “buffer zone” of the Historic Center of Quito\, the first city inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List.  \nThis project was a collaboration between different community actors and various local\, national and international cultural heritage experts. They came together to explore\, experiment and examine the historical layers of fabric\, values\, cultures\, traditions and experiences of the historic La Alameda neighborhood to test the cultural concepts proposed for inclusion in the NUA and to develop and showcase tools to implement them. The Project aimed to benefit the neighborhood through the creation of concrete cultural heritage-based sustainable development tools and also to point the way towards viable strategies\, replicable around the world\, to realize the potential of culture to drive sustainable urbanization\, as expressed in the NUA. \nSix years later\, participants in the Vive Alameda project as well as partner and colleagues will assemble to consider the potential for culture and heritage in sustainable urbanism documented in Alameda and reflected in the New Urban Agenda – and the ongoing efforts to realise that potential. \nFocal point:  Arq Angelica Arias\, Executive Director\, Instituto Metropolitano de Patrimonio de Quito. anearias@hotmail.com \nSelect one or several themes the side-event contributes to (fighting inequalities\, sustainable urban economic development\, climate action\, peace and security\, localizing global agendas) \nThe event will focus on the treatment of culture and heritage in the New Urban Agenda\, including the following:  \n\nPromoting the ecological and social function of land\, fostering ecosystem-based solutions to ensure sustainable consumption and production patterns (NUA Sections 14c\, 45\, 69)\nQuality\, decent and productive jobs\, including through the promotion of cultural and creative industries\, sustainable tourism\, performing arts and heritage conservation activities (NUA 60)\nLeveraging of cultural heritage for sustainable urban development\,  rehabilitating and revitalizing urban areas (NUA Section 38\, 125)\nStrengthening social participation and the exercise of citizenship\, stimulating participation and responsibility (NUA Section 38\, 125) \n\n\nSustainable\, dense\, low-carbon\, inclusive land use and territorial planning\, including the upgrading of slums and informal\, while preserving cultural heritage (52\, 69\, 97\, 124)

SUMMARY:Ecocide: A Discussion of Law and Ethics
DESCRIPTION:Ecocide: A Discussion of Law and Ethics\nThursday\, January 20\, 2022\nVIRTUAL EVENT\n9 a.m. Los Angeles | 12 p.m. New York & Quito | 6 p.m. The Hague \nREGISTER TODAY \nMass environmental devastation affects us all\, even if the damage is inflicted within national borders. Yet as it stands today international law is inadequate to address extreme\, willful damage to the environment. \nNow\, a global effort is underway to make international law a more powerful mechanism to protect our planet. In June 2021\, the Independent Expert Panel for the Legal Definition of Ecocide defined ecocide as the “unlawful or wanton acts committed with knowledge that there is a substantial likelihood of severe and either widespread or long-term damage to the environment being caused by those acts.” \nThis definition is an initial step to making ecocide an international crime. At present\, the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court lists four international crimes: genocide\, crimes against humanity\, war crimes and the crime of aggression. Recognizing ecocide as the fifth would create\, in the Panel’s words\, “a new and practical legal tool” to preserve and protect the Earth\, our common home. \n \nLeft to right: Hugo Echeverria\, Kate Mackintosh\, Olivia Swaak-Goldman\, Karenna Gore \nOn Thursday\, January 20\, 2022\, at noon (New York time)\, “Ecocide: A Discussion of Law and Ethics” will assemble international lawyers and scholars to discuss the Panel’s efforts to define ecocide as well as to examine the significance of shifting to an eco-centric framework. \nScheduled speakers include attorney and consultant Hugo Echeverria\, an expert in the environmental rule of law\, wildlife crime\, and the rights of Nature; Kate Mackintosh\, inaugural executive director of the Promise Institute for Human Rights at UCLA School of Law and a deputy chair of the Independent Expert Panel for the Legal Definition of Ecocide; and Olivia Swaak-Goldman\, executive director of the Wildlife Justice Commission\, who  has published extensively on international criminal law and humanitarian law. Karenna Gore\, CEE’s founder and executive director\, organized the session and will serve as moderator. \nThis event is sponsored by the Center for Earth Ethics at Union Theological Seminary\, the Sabin Center for Climate Change Law at Columbia Law School\, the Promise Institute for Human Rights at UCLA School of Law\, and the Wildlife Justice Commission. \nREGISTER TODAY \nPhoto by attplit on Unsplash
