SUMMARY:Conference | The Right to a Healthy Environment: Looking Ahead
DESCRIPTION:A Program in Observance of World Environment Day A Pre-Parliament Event of the August 2023 Convening of The Parliament of the World’s Religions \n\n\n\nThe Right to a Healthy Environment was approved overwhelmingly as a basic human right by the UN General Assembly in July 2023\, the first recognition of a new basic human right since The Right to Water and Sanitation in 2010. This was a historic step forward for human rights and protection of the environment\, and faith-based organizations played a significant role in the campaign for this recognition. The Right to a Healthy Environment is included in the constitutions of over 100 countries but is far from realization. What role can the world’s religious communities play going forward to fully manifest the right to a healthy environment – in the urgent “triple crisis” of the climate emergency\, pollution and loss of biodiversity? The recognition of a new basic human right is especially notable as this year we will celebrate the 75th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. \n\n\n\nSpeakers include Daniel Magraw (President Emeritus\, Center for International Environmental Law\, and Senior Fellow\, Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies)\, the Rev. Melanie Mullen (Director of Reconciliation\, Justice and Creation Care\, The Episcopal Church)\, Geoffrey Roth (Lakota; Member\, United Nations Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues)\, David Hales (Chair of Climate Action and Trustee\, Parliament of the World’s Religions) and The Ven. Doyeon Park (Co-Chair\, Committee of Religious NGOs at the UN; President\, Buddhist Council of New York; Representative of Won Buddhism to the United Nations). \n\n\n\nCo-sponsored by the Center for Earth Ethics\, the Committee of Religious NGOs at the UN\, The Episcopal Church\, NGO Committee on Human Rights\, and the Parliament of the World’s Religions.

SUMMARY:Book Launch | "The Planet You Inherit" by Larry Rasmussen
DESCRIPTION:Room AD 30\, Union Theological Seminary\, 3041 Broadway\, New York\, NY 10027 \n\n\n\n\n\nOur children’s and grandchildren’s generation will face a different world\, one affected by climate instability\, mass uncertainty\, and breathtaking extinction. In fact\, the next generation will face the reality that human activity is changing the planet from one geological epoch to another. From this vantage point\, renowned Christian environmental ethicist Larry Rasmussen writes to his grandchildren in “The Planet You Inherit: Letters to My Grandchildren when Uncertainty’s a Sure Thing” (Broadleaf Books\, 2022). \n\n\n\n“There’s real wisdom in this book\, not just for the next generation but for those of us making the decisions right now. Those of us of a certain age have a very real responsibility to do everything we can to pass on a working planet to those who come after!” — Bill McKibben\, Schumann Distinguished Scholar\, Middlebury College\, and author of “Falter: Has the Human Game Begun to Play Itself Out?” \n\n\n\nDr. Rasmussen is the Reinhold Niebuhr Professor Emeritus of Social Ethics at Union Theological Seminary. He is the author of “Earth Honoring Faith: Religious Ethics in a New Key” (2013) and “Earth Community\, Earth Ethics” (1996). \n\n\n\nThis event is free and open to the public.

SUMMARY:Book Launch | "Chasing the Devil at Foggy Bottom" by Shaun Casey -- CANCELLED
DESCRIPTION:EVENT CANCELLED. WE WILL POST NEW DATE WHEN INFORMATION BECOMES AVAILABLE \n\n\n\nMcNally Amphitheater | Fordham University at Lincoln Center | 140 W. 62nd Street | New York\, NY 10023  \n\n\n\nShaun A. Case was the founding director of the United States Department of State’s Office of Religion and Global Affairs under Secretary of State John Kerry\, and in his lively new book about his time working there he makes a compelling case for integrating the “faith factor” into the American practice of global diplomacy. The issue has never been more important\, the stakes never higher.  \n\n\n\nChasing the Devil at Foggy Bottom is both a memoir of life inside the Beltway and a call to think more broadly about faith’s role in world affairs and how the United States can play a more effective role for peace and justice. \n\n\n\nAfter a brief presentation of his book\, Casey will be joined in a discussion about these issues by two leaders with long and broad experience in world affairs: \n\n\n\nRuth Messinger\, Global Ambassador for the American Jewish World Service and former Manhattan Borough president \n\n\n\nDaniel Kurtzer\, former U.S. ambassador to Israel and to Egypt and current professor of Middle East Policy Studies at Princeton University’s School of Public and International Affairs \n\n\n\nKarenna Gore\, executive director of the Center for Earth Ethics at Union Theological Seminary\, will lead the conversation and field questions from the audience for our speakers \n\n\n\nThis event is organized and co-sponsored by: \n\n\n\n\nThe Orthodox Christian Studies Center at Fordham\n\n\n\nUnion Theological Seminary\n\n\n\nFordham’s Center on Religion and Culture\n\n\n\n\nThis event is free and open to the public.

SUMMARY:Rethinking Thanksgiving: From Land Acknowledgement to LANDBACK
DESCRIPTION:Indigenous solidarity is an essential part of the struggle for racial and environmental justice. It is critical that we deepen our commitment to Indigenous Sovereignty in ourselves and in our movements\, take collective action towards land rematriation and support efforts to ensure a just and sustainable existence for all of our future generations. \n \n \nJoin Tonatierra\, NDN Collective\, American Indian Law Alliance\, Sogorea Te Land Trust and the Indigenous Solidarity Network for “Rethinking Thanksgiving: From Land Acknowledgement to LANDBACK” on Sunday\, November 20 at 1 pm PT/4 pm ET.
